Burning Man, the iconic annual gathering in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, is known for its art, music, and free-spirited atmosphere. However, this year, the event took an unexpected turn when heavy rainfall turned the desert into a muddy quagmire, leaving thousands of attendees stranded. But amidst the chaos, DJ Diplo and comedian Chris Rock found an unconventional way to escape the festival’s flooding—by hitching a ride in a fan’s pickup truck.
Diplo shared their adventure on his Instagram account, posting a video of himself, Chris Rock, and fellow festival-goers crammed into the back of a pickup truck. He recounted the story, explaining that a generous fan offered them a ride out of Burning Man after they had to endure a six-mile trek through the muddy terrain.

“I legit walked the side of the road for hours with my thumb out cuz I have a show in DC tonight and didn’t want to let y’all down,” Diplo added in the caption, showing his dedication to his fans and his commitment to fulfilling his performance obligations.
But it wasn’t just Diplo’s resourcefulness that saved the day; it was also the fan’s wise choice of transportation. Little did they know when they purchased the pickup truck that it would come in handy for rescuing festival-goers from the unexpected deluge.
The situation at Burning Man became so dire that attendees were ordered to conserve their limited resources, including food, water, and fuel. Sheltering in place became necessary due to the relentless weather conditions that transformed the once-dusty desert into a mud-covered landscape.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office made an official statement about the closure of the event, explaining that the entrance to Burning Man would remain closed for the remainder of the event due to the recent heavy rainfall. They urged people to avoid traveling to the area, as they would be turned away.
Amidst these challenges, the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation into the tragic death of one person during the event, as reported by the New York Times.
Burning Man, known as a global gathering of artists, creators, and community organizers, faced an unexpected twist this year. Despite the weather-related hurdles, the spirit of resilience and camaraderie persevered among the festival-goers.
As the event’s website describes it, Burning Man is a place where individuals come together to co-create art, events, and local initiatives worldwide. This year’s event, initially scheduled from August 27th to Labor Day, will undoubtedly be remembered for its unique challenges and the unforgettable escape of Diplo and Chris Rock from the muddy mayhem.
