Folsom Field, the iconic stadium at the University of Colorado Boulder, is set to host new concert acts this summer, breaking a streak of more than two decades dominated by Dead & Company. The lineup includes Tyler Childers, who will perform on August 17, blending country, bluegrass, and folk. Notably, this summer marks the introduction of electronic music to Folsom Field, with the electronic group Odesza set to perform on June 29. This marks a departure from the traditional Dead & Company performances that have been a fixture at the venue since 2016.
Ryan Gottlieb, the University of Colorado Boulder’s senior associate athletic director, expressed enthusiasm for the new acts, describing the upcoming shows as “awesome” and anticipating a unique vibe at Folsom Field. Don Strasburg, co-president of AEG Presents Rocky Mountains and Pacific Northwest, collaborated with CU Boulder to diversify the concert offerings following Dead & Co.’s last shows in July.
The addition of Odesza represents a significant shift in the musical genres featured at Folsom Field, and Strasburg sees it as evidence of a broader entertainment scope that can appeal to the community. Folsom Field, historically known for hosting renowned musicians like Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones, and Paul McCartney during the ’70s and ’80s, has been revitalized as a concert venue.
After a 15-year hiatus from hosting concerts at Folsom Field, Dead & Co.’s performances reignited the tradition in 2016. The university aims to continue this legacy, hosting multiple shows each year. The economic impact of such events extends beyond the university, benefiting the Boulder community by boosting local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and retail shops. An economic impact report for the final three Dead & Co. shows estimated a direct impact of $31 million and a total impact of $48 million, underscoring the significance of large-scale events in Boulder.
CU Boulder plans to program several summer events at the stadium, aiming to bring vitality to the university and the broader community. The concerts not only provide entertainment but also contribute to the local economy and support various departments on campus. The diversity of entertainment brought in by CU Boulder is appreciated by the Boulder Chamber, and the community looks forward to welcoming audiences to enjoy the concerts and engage with local businesses.
