Some of the most popular shows that had been removed over the previous few months have recently received new licences and renewals on Netflix in the United States. Reign, The Originals, and Criminal Minds are all back on the service. As you may be aware, Netflix obtains a lot of its movies and television shows through licences from companies like Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. They grant a fixed-term licence for these works, and it is up to the two parties to decide whether to extend it.
Many have decided not to renew or even licence titles to Netflix any longer in favour of stocking their own services due to the rise in streaming services, which are frequently owned by businesses that previously obtained Netflix licences. That brings us to this year, during which we’ve seen some major shows eliminated and three major shows added: Criminal Minds, Reign, and The Originals. But as our article suggests, after being taken down, all three are now back online.
The removal of The Originals from The CW came as a surprise because it didn’t fall within the typical “lifetime plus 5 years” window. However, as of August 18th, every episode of the five-season series has returned to Netflix in the US after leaving on July 1st.
The fact that the show was renewed gives us some hope that The Vampire Diaries, which is set to end in September 2022, might also be renewed. The entire Vampire Diaries universe, including Legacies, will be exclusively available on Netflix if it is renewed.
Reign seasons 1-3 were taken off Netflix in June 2022, but season 4 surprisingly made it through the initial purge. In September 2022, the fourth and final season was scheduled to end. All three of the first seasons were once again available on Netflix as of August 18; however, unlike the other two series mentioned above, a removal notice for September 2022 is currently visible. That suggests that Reign’s return to Netflix US may not last long.
Criminal Minds (Seasons 1-12)
Yes, following a significant removal in late June 2022, Criminal Minds is back. The news spread quickly online, but as of August 18th, 2022, Netflix US has restored it. Sadly, Netflix only recovered its losses. That indicates that at least 3 seasons are still missing and are only available on Paramount+.
Given how popular it was on Netflix, according to The Ankler’s article by The Entertainment Strategy Guy, this removal was especially significant. He likened it to losing “its Jason Giambi” (whatever that means). The programme reportedly clocked 1.333 billion hours in the US alone, according to Nielsen statistics. According to our information, Netflix has extended Criminal Minds for another year; therefore, it will return in 2023.
Warner Bros. Discovery, for example, has been phasing out Originals and even licenced out All American: Homecoming to Netflix rather than releasing it on its own platform.
