The Saw franchise is back with its most disturbing and personal installment yet, as Saw X is set to hit theaters on September 29. The official synopsis reveals that the film takes place between Saw I and II, following Tobin Bell’s character, John Kramer, a.k.a. Jigsaw. Stricken with cancer, John travels to Mexico in search of a miracle cure, only to find himself caught in a scam preying on vulnerable individuals.

The newly released trailer for Saw X offers a glimpse into John’s journey and the horrifying realization he faces. As he resolves to take action, audiences can expect a new round of gore, psychological torture, and deadly games of survival. The distributor, Lionsgate, describes the film as “Jigsaw’s most personal game,” and promises that the infamous serial killer will return to his work, setting up devious and ingenious traps for the con artists.

Directed by Kevin Greutert, who previously helmed Saw VI and Saw 3D, and written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, known for their work on Spiral and Jigsaw, Saw X features an ensemble cast, including Shawnee Smith, Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, and Michael Beach. Tobin Bell’s return as John Kramer, the iconic engineer-turned-killer, and Shawnee Smith reprising her role as the dangerous Amanda Young adds an exciting layer to the film.

Originally slated for a late October release, Lionsgate surprised fans during San Diego Comic-Con by announcing that Saw X would hit theaters a month earlier on September 29. Producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules expressed their excitement for Tobin Bell’s ninth appearance as Jigsaw, acknowledging his performance as a crucial element that made the franchise a phenomenon.

Kevin Greutert, who wrapped up filming Saw X on February 10, shared his rewarding experience on Twitter. Despite facing significant challenges, including contracting COVID-19 toward the end of production, Greutert found the film to be one of the most epic experiences of his life. He revealed that the movie was shot entirely on edgy locations in Mexico City, and he hopes the title “Saw X” reflects the return to the roots of what made the franchise special to him and fans of John Kramer’s saga.

The Saw franchise first began in 2004 with a hit directed by James Wan, which featured Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, Danny Glover, and Tobin Bell in his brief but pivotal role as Jigsaw. The film’s massive success, grossing $103 million worldwide with a modest budget of $1.2 million, kickstarted the franchise’s enduring popularity.

With Saw X promising to be a riveting and horrifying addition to the series, horror fans eagerly anticipate its release in theaters on September 29.
