In a display of dominance and determination, the Hermantown Hawks boys’ hockey team secured their fifth consecutive Section 7A championship title on Wednesday night. Facing off against the third-seeded Hibbing/Chisholm, the top-seeded Hawks delivered a commanding performance, clinching a resounding 4-0 victory at AMSOIL Arena.
The game began with an explosive start for Hermantown, as Will Esterbrooks wasted no time, finding the back of the net just four minutes into the action. Establishing an early lead set the tone for the Hawks’ relentless pursuit of victory.
As the game progressed into the second period, the Bluejackets attempted to rally on a power play opportunity. However, their efforts were thwarted by the resilient defense of the Hawks. Charlie Marchand further solidified Hermantown’s lead with a crucial goal, extending their advantage to 2-0 with just over seven minutes remaining in the period.
Not content with a two-goal lead, the Hawks continued to press forward, with AJ Francisco adding to their tally shortly thereafter. Heading into the final period with a commanding 3-0 lead, Hermantown maintained their focus and determination.
In the third period, both teams battled fiercely, seeking any opportunity to shift the momentum in their favor. However, it was Hermantown’s Ford Skytta who delivered the decisive blow, sealing the victory with a fourth goal just over three minutes before the final buzzer.
While the offense showcased their scoring prowess, the backbone of the Hawks’ success lay in the exceptional performance of goaltender Dane Callaway. Callaway’s stellar play between the pipes ensured a shutout, preserving Hermantown’s lead and securing their ticket to the state tournament in St. Paul.
With their fifth consecutive Section 7A championship title in hand, the Hermantown Hawks now shift their focus to the state tournament, where they will eagerly await their next opponent.
