Chula Vista Councilmember Andrea Cardenas has stepped down from her position on the City Council following allegations of defrauding the federal government. In a memo sent to her colleagues on Monday, Cardenas cited a need to prioritize her mental health and the well-being of her community as the reasons for her resignation.
The first-term official stated, “In an effort to prioritize my mental health, and the health of my community, I have made the very difficult choice to formally resign effective immediately from my position as Councilmember for our City’s 4th District.” She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve her community and work alongside her colleagues.
Cardenas, 31, did not provide further comment on her resignation. Her decision comes just ahead of a scheduled court appearance with her brother, Jesus Cardenas, where they face charges of fraud, grand theft, and money laundering.
While Cardenas’ attorney, Pedro Bernal, declined to comment on the possibility of a plea deal, he acknowledged that the legal proceedings had taken a toll on her mental health. He characterized her resignation as an effort to address her well-being amid the ongoing case.
Mayor John McCann, who had previously called for Cardenas’ resignation, expressed support for her decision, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public trust in elected officials. He stated, “The resignation of Councilmember Cardenas is appropriate given the seriousness of the criminal charges she faces and the difficulty of maintaining public trust.”
Councilmember Jose Preciado, who also urged Cardenas to step down, echoed sentiments of support for her well-being. He remarked, “I am so glad Andrea has decided to focus on her well-being and mental health. I hope that she is able to move on with her personal and professional life as soon as possible.”
Cardenas’ resignation marks a significant development in Chula Vista’s political landscape and underscores the challenges facing elected officials amidst legal controversies. As the city moves forward, the focus remains on addressing the needs of the community and upholding the integrity of public service.
