Makers on Rust announce that production is shutting down on the film until the investigation into the on-set shooting tragedy is complete. The Western action thrill ride stars Alec Baldwin as an Old West outlaw who should hazard the abundance on his head to save his teenage grandson from the hangman’s noose after he is condemned for an accidental homicide. Baldwin co-fostered the story with essayist/director Joel Souza and is creating the task after having recently worked with the filmmaker on Crown Vic.

Nearly seven days after the tragedy happened on the set of the film, makers behind Rust (via The Wrap) sent a reminder to the cast and team of the film announcing that production would be shut down until “at least until the investigations are complete.” The update confirms that Souza is right now recuperating and also states that the makers are donating to the AFI scholarship store set up in Hutchins’ name. “Our hearts are with all of you, as we as a whole go through this tragic time and grieve the deficiency of our colleague and dear companion, Halyna Hutchins. We are family and we should stand adjacent to each other as families do in troublesome occasions. We remain in close touch with Halyna’s family and laud the strength they show in the face of unspeakable tragedy. It is beyond an inspiration.

As we go through this emergency, we have made the decision to wrap the set at least until the investigations are complete. Although our hearts are broken, and it is hard to see beyond the horizon, this is, right now, a pause rather than an end. The soul that presented to us all to this special place remains.”

Hutchins’ death on the set of Rust has sent a shockwave of emotions through Hollywood with everyone from Baldwin himself to co-star Ackles and the family of The Crow star Brandon Lee communicating their anguish over her misfortune. While shutting down production is certainly a positive advance forward for those near the tragedy, eyes will all the more so be on the investigation by Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department and the makers of the film. Only the reality of the situation will become obvious eventually who may be held ultimately responsible for Hutchins’ death and what it will mean for the resumption of production on Rust.
