Greta Gerwig informed America Ferrera of Gloria’s pivotal “Barbie” monologue “before I even read the script,” according to Ferrera.
Near the close of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, America Ferrera gives a speech that steals the show, to some crowd applause.
By addressing the complex and challenging experience of being a woman in contemporary society, Ferrera, 39, gives one of the movie’s most memorable performances as her character Gloria and her daughter Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) assist in saving Barbie Land from a patriarchal takeover initiated by Ken (Ryan Gosling).
Gloria’s monologue motivates the other Barbies in Barbie Land to awaken from the brainwashing practised by Ken’s “Kendom” because she is the only female employee at Mattel, as represented in the film.

“I was just sobbing, and then I looked around, and I realised everybody’s crying on the set,” Gerwig recounted of filming the moment in a recent interview with The Atlantic. The males are crying as well because they believe they will never be able to give their own speech, you know? Additionally, they have their painful twin tightrope.

“You must be in good shape, but not too good. And you should never declare your desire to be skinny. You must declare that you want to be skinny in addition to being healthy. You must have money, yet you cannot beg for it because it is impolite. You must be the boss, but you must not be cruel. Though you must take the lead, you cannot squelch other people’s thoughts. You should adore being a mother, but try not to constantly bring them up in conversation. You need to be a career lady who also puts other people first. It’s absurd that you have to take responsibility for men’s inappropriate behaviour, but if you bring it up, you’re accused of whining.
Being a woman is utterly impossible. It breaks my heart that you don’t think you’re good enough considering how clever and gorgeous you are. We have to constantly be outstanding, but we always manage to get it wrong.
But be distinct and appreciative at all times. But keep in mind that the system is corrupt. So, while being aware of it, constantly remember to be grateful. Never get old, never act impolite, never brag, never be selfish, never trip, never fall, never exhibit fear, never cross the line. Too difficult! Nobody thanks you or offers you a medal because it is too contradicting. And it turns out that everything is your responsibility in addition to the fact that you are doing everything incorrectly.
