Mark Seiler, a seasoned film executive known for his leadership roles at RKO Pictures, Hemdale Films, and Capella Films, has died at the age of 75 after battling Parkinson’s disease and complications from COVID-19. Throughout his illustrious career, Seiler played a significant role in financing and producing numerous successful and critically acclaimed films. From Meryl Streep‘s “Plenty” to comedies like “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and “The Mask,” his contributions left a lasting impact on the film industry.
Born on May 2, 1948, in Glen Cove, New York, Mark Edwin Seiler grew up in Sands Point, Long Island. He attended prestigious schools like Buckley Day School, Choate Rosemary Hall, and Paul D. Schreiber High School before earning a BS in Economics from Tulane University.

Seiler entered the entertainment industry when he joined RKO Pictures, a revived version of the iconic Hollywood studio brand. He quickly rose through the ranks, ultimately becoming the president of RKO Pictures in July 1985. During his tenure, he showed a keen eye for talent, discovering stars like Denzel Washington and personally handpicking actors for significant roles in movies such as “Carbon Copy” and “Hamburger Hill.”
In the early 1990s, Seiler took on the role of CEO at Capella Films, a German-backed film financing company. Under his guidance, Capella Films backed a string of successful comedies, including “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and “Dumb and Dumber,” as well as acclaimed dramas like “The Shadow” and “Nobody’s Fool.”
Later in his career, Seiler shifted his focus to anti-piracy technology and co-founded Geocodex, specializing in geo-encryption to combat piracy across various industries.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Seiler was also known for his keen mentorship and ability to recognize potential in others. Colleagues and friends, including actor Morgan Fairchild and producer Marc Platt, praised his guidance and friendship.
A memorial for Mark Seiler is being planned for early December, and in honor of his memory, the family requests donations to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
