The American Film Institute (AFI) has just made an exciting announcement: Netflix‘s highly-anticipated apocalyptic thriller, “Leave the World Behind,” is set to open the 37th AFI Fest. This thrilling cinematic experience, directed by Sam Esmail of “Mr. Robot” fame, will have its world premiere on October 25 at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. AFI Fest 2023, the annual film festival that celebrates cinematic artistry, will be held from October 25 to 29.

AFI President Bob Gazzale expressed his enthusiasm for the film, stating, “Sam Esmail is a commanding voice in the new generation of cinematic storytellers, and we are proud to present the World Premiere of his new film at AFI FEST.” He further emphasized the significance of Esmail’s AFI Conservatory background, adding to the festival’s sense of pride.

The film’s synopsis offers a glimpse into its gripping narrative: Amanda and her husband Clay plan a weekend getaway with their children, Archie and Rose, in a luxurious rental home. However, their tranquil vacation takes a nightmarish turn when two strangers, G.H. and his daughter Ruth, arrive unannounced. They bring with them shocking news of a mysterious cyberattack and seek refuge in the house, claiming it as their own. As the two families grapple with a growing and terrifying disaster, they must confront their roles in a world on the brink of collapse.

“Leave the World Behind” is an adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s acclaimed 2020 novel of the same name. Sam Esmail, known for his masterful work on “Mr. Robot,” takes on the roles of writer and director. The film boasts a stellar ensemble cast featuring Hollywood icons Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Mahershala Ali, alongside Myha’la Herrold, Kevin Bacon, Farrah MacKenzie, and Charlie Evans.

Adding to the project’s prestige, former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama serve as executive producers, joining Tonia Davis, Daniel M. Stillman, and Nick Krishnamurthy.

Netflix subscribers won’t have to wait long to witness this cinematic masterpiece, as “Leave the World Behind” is set to stream on the platform starting December 8. With its world premiere at AFI Fest and a cast and crew of exceptional talent, this apocalyptic thriller promises to be a must-watch event that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats. Don’t miss out on this thrilling ride into a collapsing world.
