A whirlwind of controversy has enveloped the upcoming biopic “Maestro,” directed by and starring Bradley Cooper as the iconic composer Leonard Bernstein. The first trailer’s release triggered mixed reactions, with a particular focus on Cooper’s use of makeup to modify his appearance. Some social media users expressed concern that the alteration played into offensive Jewish stereotypes. However, Bernstein’s family has now come forward to defend the actor and shed light on the matter.
The family members, including Jamie, Alexander, and Nina Bernstein, issued a statement addressing the criticism. They assured the public that they were fully supportive of Cooper’s artistic decisions. “It happens to be true that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose. Bradley chose to use make-up to amplify his resemblance, and we’re perfectly fine with that,” the statement read. They emphasized that their father would have approved as well.

The Bernstein family went on to dispel any negative notions surrounding the film and its creative choices. They believed that the criticisms were more an attempt to diminish Cooper’s successful efforts rather than genuine concerns. “Any strident complaints around this issue strike us above all as disingenuous attempts to bring a successful person down a notch – a practice we observed all too often perpetrated on our own father.”
Furthermore, they shared their deep admiration for Cooper’s commitment to the project. “At all times during the making of this film, we could feel the profound respect and yes, the love that Bradley brought to his portrait of Leonard Bernstein and his wife, our mother Felicia. We feel so fortunate to have had this experience with Bradley, and we can’t wait for the world to see his creation.”
The controversy had initially erupted last year when images of Cooper’s appearance surfaced. Critics raised concerns about the potential for “ethnic cosplay” and likened the use of makeup to blackface. However, the Bernstein family’s endorsement adds a new perspective, emphasizing Cooper’s dedication to the role and the family’s belief in his portrayal.
“Maestro” is set to make its debut at the Venice Film Festival in the coming weeks and will subsequently be available on Netflix in December. The film explores the intricate relationship between Leonard Bernstein and his wife, actress, and activist Felicia Montealegre.
As the film’s premiere approaches, the conversation surrounding Cooper’s portrayal will undoubtedly continue. Bernstein’s family’s support serves as a poignant reminder that artistic interpretations can vary and should be approached with an open mind.
