The 75th annual Emmy Awards, which were originally scheduled to air on September 18 on Fox, have been postponed due to the ongoing strikes by actors and writers against media conglomerates. The new date for the ceremony has not been finalized yet, but the original date and month are no longer under consideration. The Television Academy and Fox are currently in talks to determine the rescheduled event’s timing, which will ideally take place after SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America reach agreements with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

By postponing the awards, the Television Academy and Fox hope to avoid the risk of hosting a mostly empty room. During the 2022 Emmy telecast, sixteen out of the 25 awards were given to actors or writers. However, SAG-AFTRA’s strike rules prohibit actors from participating in publicity for work produced by struck companies, including awards shows. Similarly, WGA writers usually contribute material for the host and presenters, who are likely to be SAG-AFTRA members.

This marks the first time in over two decades that the Emmy Awards have been postponed. The last instance occurred in 2001, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when the Television Academy and CBS decided to push back the ceremony, which ultimately aired in early November of the same year.

While the postponement affects the ceremony’s date, phase two voting for the Emmy Awards will continue as initially planned. TV Academy members will begin voting on the nominees from August 17 onwards. However, the exact timing of when the 2023 Emmys will be handed out remains uncertain for now.

As the strikes by actors and writers continue, the entertainment industry is navigating a challenging period, with negotiations ongoing between the guilds and the studios. The postponement of the Emmy Awards reflects the significant impact of these strikes on the television landscape. Until the strikes are resolved and agreements are reached, the industry and its audiences will eagerly await updates on when the Emmy Awards will finally take place to honor the outstanding achievements in television.
