In the latest episode of her Barely Famous podcast, Kailyn Lowry shared the challenges of managing her five kids at home while her newborn twins were in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The 31-year-old podcast host and her boyfriend, Elijah Scott, discussed their experience with the premature birth of their twins, born five weeks early.
Lowry revealed that due to the premature birth, they couldn’t hold their babies until over 24 hours after their birth as they were settled into the NICU. The NICU stay extended for a couple of weeks, during which Lowry and Scott learned about the experiences of other families facing longer durations in the unit.
Expressing frustration at not receiving clear answers from doctors, Lowry mentioned her concerns about the health of her girl twin, referred to as Baby B. She described the difficulty of dealing with a baby who showed no signs of waking up to eat or hunger cues. The emotional toll of the NICU journey, including difficulties in feeding and crying, weighed heavily on Lowry.
The logistical challenges of having one twin released before the other added stress, requiring the couple to travel back and forth between home and the NICU. With six other kids at home, including one who was discharged from the NICU, the situation became complex for Lowry and Scott.
Lowry shared an emotional moment when a doctor inquired if she needed psychological help after breaking down about the situation. Despite feeling she was handling herself well, she acknowledged struggling in certain aspects and having a hard time processing the NICU experience.
She emphasized the difficulty of not being able to share the NICU experience together and highlighted the ongoing concerns about the well-being of her children, even after bringing them home. The couple worked on making the NICU space feel homey for their daughter, printing out pictures for the wall to create a comforting environment.
After the challenging NICU journey, the couple experienced the joy of bringing their baby girl home. However, Lowry acknowledged that her worries did not completely dissipate, and there were differences in the bonding experiences between the twins.
Despite the hardships, Lowry and Scott navigated the NICU journey, focusing on creating a supportive environment for their children and addressing the emotional toll of the experience. The episode provides a glimpse into the realities faced by parents dealing with premature births and the extended stay in the NICU.
