The first teaser trailer for Copenhagen Cowboy, the upcoming Danish television series from director Nicolas Winding Refn, has been made available on Netflix (Drive, Only God Forgives). The frantic montage, which is as bloody as it is beautiful, showcases everything Refn’s distinctive style is known for. The teaser, which is a series of neon-drenched images set to a pulsing techno beat, does little to explain the plot. We do, however, get a glimpse of the series’ neo-noir style, which appears to have echoes of Refn’s earlier work.

The show centres on the mysterious young protagonist Miu (Angela Bundalovic), who, after a lifetime of servitude, seeks to exact revenge on Copenhagen’s underworld of crime. She runs into her adversary Rakel while searching, and the two of them “embark on an odyssey through the natural and supernatural.” The director’s latest film, Copenhagen Cowboy, is the first to be set in his native Denmark in more than 15 years. The Pusher trilogy, a line of Danish crime movies set in Copenhagen, was directed by him in the past.

With a key cast that includes renowned cinematographer Magnus Nordenhof Jnck (“A Hijacking”), production designer Gitte Malling (“Land of Mine”), and musicians Cliff Martinez, Peter Peter, Peter Kyed, and Julian Winding, “Copenhagen Cowboy” looks as stylish as Refn’s previous works. Winding Refn has produced a number of movies in the US, but he has never worked as a studio director. He acknowledges that he was approached about helming a James Bond film (possibly “Spectre”), but that was it. “We recently met, and it was wonderful. However, not everything is meant to occur. Sometimes, he says, talking about something is more enjoyable than doing it.

He claims that Elia Kazan’s advice to “do it your way” some 26 years ago, after he had directed “Pusher,” was the best advice he has ever received. Refn suggests he hasn’t finished exploring Los Angeles, despite the cathartic experience he had working from home in Denmark. I absolutely adore working in Los Angeles, he declares. It’s constructed on a desert; the surroundings and landscape are foreign. Therefore, it’s like taking a plane to Mars and shooting there to me.

Additionally, Winding Refn might get to see Ryan Gosling again. “Ryan plays a significant role in my life. We have strong creative and personal ties to one another, and I adore him. I have no doubt that we’ll collaborate once more in the future. We frequently discuss it.
