Netflix has released the first official full trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn’s new six-episode series Copenhagen Cowboy, which it initially teased in September (check it out above). The streamer has also chosen January 5, 2023, for the global launch.

The neon-drenched noir series centers on the mysterious teenage protagonist Miu (Angela Bundalovic). She is on the verge of a new beginning after a lifetime of servitude as she makes her way through the desolate landscape of Copenhagen’s criminal underworld. She meets Rakel (Lola Corfixen), her arch-enemy while seeking justice and exacting retribution. Together, they set off on a journey through the natural and magical worlds. As the two women learn they are not alone, they are many, and the past eventually shapes and defines their future.

Zlatko Buric, Andreas Lykke Jorgensen, Jason Hendel-Forssell, LiIi Zhang, and Dragana Milutinovic all make appearances.

The series made its film festival debut in Venice. The Pusher trilogy, Drive, and The Neon Demon director Winding Refn said of Copenhagen Cowboy when it was first announced, “With Copenhagen Cowboy, By developing a series, an expansion of my constantly changing alter egos, now in the form of my young heroine, I am going back to my past to shape my future, Miu.”

This is Winding Refn’s first project in his native Denmark in 15 years, and he also serves as director. Sara Isabella Jönsson, Johanne Algren, and Mona Masri are the authors. Magnus Nordenhof Jack, an Oscar-nominated cinematographer, shot Tobias Lindholm’s A War.

Lene Borglum and Christina Bostofte Erritze produce Copenhagen Cowboy, with Liv Corfixen and Matthew Newman serving as executive producers.
