The man responsible for the death of Nicki Minaj’s father in a hit-and-run pled guilty to the felony charges which include leaving the scene of a fatal accident and tampering with evidence, as per the judge he will receive not more than a year in prison. On February, 2021, Nicki Minaj’s dad Robert Maraj was struck and killed by Charles Polevich following a hit-and-run. The perpetrator Charles Polevich stopped to see the victim Robert Maraj who was critically wounded before taking off, Polevich later turned himself in to the police. The victim was transported to a hospital where he passed away, Nassau County Detective Lt. told the media then that Polevich drove a 1992 Volvo Station Wagon, saying it is “more distinctive than modern cars”.
Cops used neary CCTV footage to trace the car to Charles’s residence, on 7th May he confessed to hitting Robert before fleeing and not reporting the incident to the police. He admitted to putting tarp on his car in order to conceal it. The State Supreme Court Justice Howard Sturim informed Polevich about the conditions of his plea deal and observed, “I’ll sentence you to no more than a year in jail”. At first, he was looking at eleven years in jail but now after he gets released Polevich will have to do community service and his driving license will be suspended. Carol Maraj, Nicki Minaj’s mother and Robert Maraj’s wife reacted to the decision, telling, “I’m not happy with that….one year in jail. I’m not happy with that. I was angry, very, very angry. I started to shake because it brought back all the memories of that night when I was sitting in the hospital.”
Carol is suing Polevich for $150 million, he will be sentenced on August. Meanwhile, his attorney said that he is “extremely remorseful for any role he may have played in Mr Maraj’s death. Mr Polevich’s life story is one of helping others which makes this case so out of character. There are no allegations of substance abuse or abuse as causative of his conduct and it is our belief that a medical heart issue contributed to Mr Polevich’s conduct.” In May last year, Nicki Minaj addressed her dad’s passing, the “Anaconda” rapper expressed, “Tho I can’t really bring myself to discuss the passing of my father as yet; I can say it has been the most devastating loss of my life. I find myself wanting to call him all the time. More so now that he’s gone. Life is funny that way.”
