Actor Christina Ricci who played Wednesday Addams in the original 1991 movie The Addams Family now stars in the Netflix series ‘Wednesday’ which is a spinoff series of the original movie. It was revealed a month earlier that Christina Ricci will star in Tim Burton’s upcoming live-action Netflix series which is the spinoff sequel series of The Addams Family. Although her role in the movie has been kept under wraps, we do know that she is not playing the titular character of Wednesday Addams. Jenna Ortega is playing Wednesday Addams along with Christina Ricci. Her role is supposed to be a series regular, joining Ortega, Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams. “Details about Ricci’s role are being kept under wraps to protect the surprise for fans but I can reveal that she plays a new character and not an older version of Wednesday,” Deadline reported.
At a panel discussion at Pittsburgh’s Steel City Con, Ricci revealed that she is done with the shooting of Wednesday and shared her experience. “I just finished it two weeks ago, and it was great. It was great working with Tim, and Jenna is amazing. I think people are going to absolutely love her as Wednesday,” she said. Ricci also talked about the movie, she said “All the kids in it are really fantastic, so I think it’s gonna be great.” In response to the news made public on Wednesday last year, fans of the ’90s Addams Family films launched an online petition to urge the producers to consider Ricci for the streaming series, and earlier this year Ricci joined the cast of Wednesday.
Both The Addams Family and The Addams Family Values are iconic movies from the early 90s. Charlie Addams created the comic book family in 1938 when he published a single-panel comic in The New Yorker. Wednesday is a coming-of-age comedy that will focus on the title character’s teenage years while attending Nevermore Academy. As Wednesday gains psychic abilities, she must solve the mystery behind a series of killings in her hometown and a supernatural event that affected her family decades previously, all as she navigates some new and very complicated relationships within the strange and diverse student body.
