According to 1899 co-creator Baran bo Odar, the show’s puzzles have straightforward solutions. Odar and Jantje Friese co-created the popular television series Dark, and they worked together once more in 1899. The series, which just made its Netflix debut, is about people departing from Europe for New York near the end of the 19th century. The discovery of the mysteriously deserted ship known as the Prometheus by the passengers marks the start of unpleasant events that spread like a curse throughout the vessel. That’s only a portion of the mystery, as supporters of their last endeavor can attest.
Odar and Friese discussed the conclusion of 1899 and revealed some of their ideas for a potential second season in an interview with IndieWire. According to Odar, they have discovered via their earlier work on Dark that the audience is smart and likes to solve problems. Some aspects of the story felt odd from the beginning in 1899. The third episode, which revealed that the passengers were being observed on many TV screens, made that much clear. With pocket electronics and other widgets, this distinctive period piece follows the pattern of modern technology appearing at random. Some of this is clarified in the conclusion, which explains that the journey is a simulation taking place in 2099. In order to forget about her son, Maura (Emily Beecham) and her husband willingly created the simulation and participated in it.
But there are still a lot of unsolved issues and a lot more about Maura’s past to be revealed.
