'Yellowstone' Delivers Shocking Character Death in Latest Revenge Plot Twist
Even after his death, John Dutton's legacy continues to haunt those who dared to cross him in the eleventh episode of Yellowstone's fifth and final season, which delivers yet another shocking murder and further deepens the drama around the Dutton family’s unraveling legacy.
Spoilers ahead for Episode 11 of Yellowstone Season 5.
Yellowstone’s core plot revolves around the Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana. Patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who was also the state’s governor, is central to the show, along with his adult children: Kayce (Luke Grimes), Jamie (Wes Bentley), and Beth (Kelly Reilly), along with Beth’s husband, Rip (Cole Hauser). When Costner departed the show amid rumors of behind-the-scenes tension, his character was killed off, with a hitman staging John's death to look like a suicide. But as the show’s audience has learned, things are far more complicated than they initially seemed.
In the Nov. 10 episode, the investigation into John’s death takes a significant turn. While the official narrative had initially labeled his death a suicide, Kayce pushes the medical examiner to dig deeper, uncovering evidence suggesting John was restrained before he died. This new revelation sparks a press conference where it is announced that John’s death is now officially being investigated as a homicide, much to the panic of Sarah (Dawn Olivieri), the scheming girlfriend of Jamie, who had orchestrated the hit.
The episode also focuses on the growing tension within the Dutton family and their desperate attempts to save their ranch. Beth meets with Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) to discuss the future of the land, but Rainwater, unable to offer real help, warns her that it may already be too late. Beth, visibly frustrated and resigned, declares, “There is no preserving this place. There is prolonging its collapse,” cynically predicting that one day, “there will be a Costco where the barn is.”
In the midst of this turmoil, Kayce confronts Jamie about his involvement in John’s death. Last week, Beth slapped Jamie in a fit of rage, and now Kayce follows suit, physically confronting his brother. However, Jamie insists he was as shocked as anyone about their father’s death, reaffirming his love for Kayce despite their complicated history. This moment is a rare glimpse of vulnerability from Jamie, though Kayce remains skeptical. Because Jamie holds the position of attorney general in Montana, he is recused from both the investigation into John’s death and any involvement in the Duttons' business dealings, which only deepens the tension between the brothers.
Jamie, now angry and humiliated, turns on Sarah, blaming her for the turn of events. Their already strained relationship reaches a boiling point when they slap each other—twice in the same episode. In a strange twist of fate, however, it’s Sarah who faces her own grim fate next.
After the heated argument, Sarah drives off, only to be ambushed by a mysterious couple who pull up beside her. Initially asking for directions, the man suddenly draws a gun and shoots Sarah in cold blood, execution-style. In a brutal twist, Sarah, the mastermind behind John’s murder, doesn’t live to see the consequences of her actions. Her death raises a crucial question: Who is behind the hit? It’s likely someone who holds John’s memory in high regard and is seeking vengeance for his untimely death. Though Yellowstone isn’t known for the same high-stakes political intrigue as Game of Thrones, Sarah’s untimely demise feels like the sort of punishment John Dutton himself would have sanctioned.
In the final moments of the episode, Jamie, who had been on the phone with Sarah during the shooting, overhears the harrowing sound of her execution. The episode ends with Jamie in a state of panic, crying and frantically calling 911, as the weight of his involvement in his father’s death and the ongoing unraveling of his family’s legacy continues to take its toll.
With betrayals, family fractures, and the bloodshed that follows, Yellowstone continues to deliver thrilling, emotionally charged episodes as the Dutton family faces its impending collapse. The final season promises even more twists, with no one safe from the consequences of their actions.
Yellowstone airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Paramount Network.
