After decades of anticipation, Nicolas Cage finally made a surprising and brief appearance as Superman in the blockbuster film, The Flash. The Academy Award-winning actor, now 59, discussed the long-awaited cameo, which delighted DC fans around the world.

Cage’s journey to portraying the iconic superhero has been a rollercoaster ride. Back in 1998, he was slated to star in the unproduced film Superman Lives, a project that was ultimately canceled before it could see the light of day. However, fate had a different plan, and more than two decades later, Cage’s dream of playing Superman was partially realized in The Flash.

Joking about his short but meaningful appearance, Cage said, “Well, I was glad I didn’t blink.” He expressed his satisfaction at finally seeing the character come to life on screen, even if it was just for a fleeting moment. The Flash featured various cameos as the protagonist, Barry Allen, explored alternate realities featuring different versions of Superman, played by actors such as Christopher Reeve, George Reeves, and Helen Slater.

Reflecting on the shelved Superman Lives project, Cage shared insights into his portrayal of the iconic hero. While the film never came to fruition, Cage’s performance in City of Angels showcased the tonality and emotional depth he would have brought to the character. He envisioned Clark Kent as more amusing, while Kal-El, Superman’s Kryptonian name, would have exuded sensitivity, goodness, and vulnerability—an almost angelic and terrifying presence.

Cage’s passion for Superman runs deep, evident in his naming of one of his sons Kal-El after the superhero’s birth name. Working on The Flash was a joy for Cage, who is a massive Superman fan and a comic book enthusiast. Despite the role being a cameo, he fully immersed himself in the character, embracing the opportunity to finally embody the beloved hero.

Looking back on the ill-fated Superman Lives project, Cage revealed that he envisioned a unique and emo-inspired Superman, distinct from previous portrayals. He fought for director Tim Burton to helm the project, recognizing the filmmaker’s talent and success with Batman and Michael Keaton. However, due to financial concerns following Burton’s film Mars Attacks, the Superman Lives project never materialized.

Nevertheless, the stars aligned, and Cage’s cameo in The Flash allowed him to experience a taste of what could have been. Fans and fellow creators alike appreciated his appearance as Superman, a character he has admired for years. As Nicolas Cage continues to leave a mark on the world of cinema, his connection to the Man of Steel remains a fascinating and cherished chapter in his storied career.
