Carol Burnett has joined the cast of Mrs. American Pie, the Apple comedy series starring Kristen Wiig, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Allison Janney, and Leslie Bibb, among others. There is currently no release date for Mrs. American Pie.

Mrs. American Pie is a story about gloriously impossible characters, written by Abe Sylvia and directed by Tate Taylor. It follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) as she attempts to secure a seat at America’s most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society, during the powderkeg era of the early 1970s. The series asks the same questions that perplex us today as Maxine seeks to bridge that impenetrable wall between the haves and the have-nots.

With the series, Burnett will make her triumphant return to television. While the iconic actress has appeared in a few guest roles over the years, she hasn’t had a starring part since her 1990 comedy series Carol & Company. With her role on the variety show The Gary Moore Show, Burnett’s comedy and television career took off.

When The Carol Burnett Show premiered in 1967, she became the first woman to host a variety show. The show would go on to air for eleven seasons and 279 episodes before being cancelled in 1978 due to Burnett’s desire to move on in her career. She went on to star in films like Annie, a musical, and Noises Off…, as well as lending her voice to Toy Story 4 lately. Burnett has been nominated for 23 Emmys, eighteen Golden Globes, three Tony Awards, and three Grammy Awards during her career, winning at least once at each award presentation.

Mrs. American Pie was developed by Dern and Jayme Lemons under their Jaywalker Pictures company. Sylvia will serve as executive producer and showrunner in addition to creating the series, with Taylor and John Norris joining him as executive producers through Wyolah Entertainment. Katie O’Connell Marsh is expected to serve as an executive producer on the show as well.
