Frankfurt, Germany:  In a shooting inside a lecture hall at Heidelberg University in southern Germany on Monday, a shooter injured numerous persons, police said, adding that the offender was now dead.

“With a long gun, a lone attacker harmed numerous persons in a lecture hall. The assailant is no longer alive “In a statement, Mannheim police said.

They said on Twitter that a significant police operation was underway at the university’s Neuenheimer Feld campus, advising people to stay away “so that rescue workers and emergency services can travel freely”

Heidelberg is a lovely university town in Baden-Württemberg, with a population of around 160,000 people.

On Monday, a lone shooter opened fire at an auditorium at the University of Heidelberg in south-west Germany, injuring numerous persons, according to authorities.

Natural sciences departments, a university clinic, and a botanical garden are all located on the university’s Neuenheimer Feld campus.

In recent years, Germany has been the target of a slew of attacks, the majority of which have been carried out by jihadists or far-right militants. School shootings, on the other hand, are uncommon in Germany, which has among of Europe’s tightest firearms prohibitions.

In a school shooting in Winnenden, Baden-Württemberg, in 2009, a former student killed nine kids, three instructors, and three bystanders. The shooter then committed suicide.

In 2002, a 19-year-old former student, reportedly in retaliation after being expelled, killed down 16 people at a school in Erfurt, Germany, including 12 instructors and two pupils. He, too, committed suicide after that.
