Children accounted for 22.4 percent of Covid-19 cases reported weekly in the United States, according to the report, which also noted that Covid-19 instances among children have been notably high for the preceding several weeks.

This comes amid growing concerns about the new Coronavirus variety, Omicron, which scientists believe could cause more infections than prior strains.

According to data given by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, over 133,000 children in the United States have tested positive for Coronavirus illness (Covid-19) in the last few days. Children accounted for 22.4 percent of Covid-19 cases reported weekly in the United States, according to the report, which also noted that Covid-19 instances among children have been notably high for the preceding several weeks.

“For the 17th week in a straight, the number of kid Covid-19 cases has surpassed 100,000. “Nearly 2 million more child cases have been reported since the first week of September,” according to the report.

The paper stated that severe Covid-19 sickness was unusual among children, but it stressed the urgent need for more data on “longer-term pandemic implications on children.”

Covid-19 was recently reported to be two to three times more common in young children than in the general population in some areas, according to the World Health Organization’s European office.

WHO Europe regional director Dr Hans Kluge emphasised the need to “protect children and the schools” amid the rapid spike in cases among the young in the region, pointing out that infection rates were high in the 5 to 14 age group.

“As the school holidays approach, we must also recognise that children infect their parents and grandparents at home, with non-vaccinated adults having a tenfold increased chance of developing serious sickness, being hospitalised, or dying,” he added, according to news agency PTI.
