1Password, a company specializing in password management services under the AgileBits umbrella, has recently completed the acquisition of endpoint security company, Kolide, for an undisclosed sum.
The CEO of 1Password, Jeff Shiner, reported that Kolide’s founder and CEO, Jason Meller, along with all 30 employees from Kolide, are set to become part of 1Password, maintaining their team structure. Meller has assumed the position of VP of product within 1Password.
Amidst the transition to a hybrid work culture where employees often toggle between personal and company-issued devices, maintaining security has become increasingly complex. “Kolide is the sole market player providing a device security and contextual access management solution capable of real-time health status checks upon authentication, safeguarding application access on these devices,” Shiner explained in discussions with TechCrunch via email.
Kolide is stationed in Boston, Massachusetts, and is an active participant in the globally emerging endpoint cybersecurity arena, expected to grow to a value of $23 billion by 2027. Its competitors include Huntress, Automox, and Uptycs—the latter being notably well-funded.
Since its inception in 2016 by Meller, joined by Mike Arpaia and Zach Wasserman, Kolide’s platform has prioritized endpoint security alerts, solutions, and more, streamlined through Slack. Its offerings comprise personalized privacy centers, steps for self-remediation, and detailed security issue context for Mac, Windows, and Linux systems, all based on Osquery, an open source project initiated by Facebook.
Kolide’s unique mechanism inhibits access to corporate apps by unrecognized endpoint devices. If a device considered ‘risky’ tries to connect to a company’s network, it gets blocked; afterward, Kolide suggests steps to the user to revert the device to a secured, ‘trusted state.’
With a customer base exceeding 250 prior to acquisition, including names like Databricks, Robinhood, Discord, and Anduril—and with 1Password among them—it’s no surprise that Kolide had successfully garnered $26.6 million from venture capital funds, backed by entities like OpenView and Matrix.
Meller conveyed to TechCrunch via email, “Kolide thrives on the belief that well-informed, motivated end users are the best defense for organizations against complex and serious security threats. Joining forces with 1Password, we foresee our user-focused security solutions reaching every organization across the globe, given 1Password’s alignment with our core principles and its wide-reaching capabilities.”
The acquisition of Kolide marks 1Password’s third significant venture following the previous additions of SecretHub, a Dutch cybersecurity company, and Passage, a provider of a passkey tool from Texas.
1Password has been witnessing substantial success, boasting an annual recurring revenue surpassing $250 million and a sweeping client base consisting of over 100,000 organizations. Despite challenging conditions in the cybersecurity market, they have raised substantial venture capital funding, achieving a multibillion-dollar valuation and planning to add an extra 250 jobs within the year.
Shiner highlighted the synergy between the two companies saying, “1Password empowers businesses with the tools to ensure secure password practices among employees, and with Kolide’s acquisition, this extends to secure device management. Integrating Kolide’s device health-based application access management into 1Password opens avenues for creating secure, high-productivity tools suitable for the evolving hybrid workspace.”
