A senior NHS doctor has issued a stern warning about the “dangerous consequences” of misusing potent weight loss drugs to achieve a “beach body ready” appearance. National medical director of NHS England, Professor Stephen Powis, expressed concern for the health of people who are “otherwise healthy” and use medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy to shed merely “a few pounds”.
Powis pointed out the risks and “side effects” of acquiring these prescription drugs through online sources.
“Reports that people are misusing them are troubling – they are not designed as a quick solution for individuals wanting to get ‘beach body ready’,” he stated.
According to Dr. Vicky Price, incoming president of the Society for Acute Medicine, there is a growing number of patients with “complications” observed from the use of weight loss drugs purchased illegally online.
Dr. Price emphasized the severity of such misuse saying, “Serious, life-threatening complications like pancreas inflammation and blood salt level changes have been seen in patients unaware of the risks.”
She urged “urgent regulation and control” since there have been significant concerns raised with authorities regarding the online access to these drugs.
An anonymous A&E physician shared a concerning incident with the Chemist and Druggist news outlet involving a “young girl” who exhibited life-threatening symptoms after using Wegovy bought online.
The patient appeared in A&E “feeling unwell, near fainting, unable to stand up, and struggling to eat,” according to the medic.
Although the girl was “not at all” overweight, she had accessed a month’s supply of the drug which led her to present with “starvation ketoacidosis,” and she needed “urgent treatment” and in-depth counselling about the severe side effects that “include death”, the doctor said.

Obesity Drug Reduces Heart Attack or Stroke Risk Regardless of Weight Loss
Starvation ketoacidosis occurs when there’s an accumulation of ketones in the bloodstream brought on by inadequate food intake. Ketones are formed when the liver metabolizes fats.
While weight loss drugs have their benefits, misuse leads to dire ramifications, Prof. Powis emphasized. “While these new drugs are set to be a potent weapon against obesity, their abuse must be avoided,” he advises.
He also warned that “purchasing meds online sans a doctor’s oversight can end in complex issues with dangerous outcomes.”
