Thursday Night Football Recap: Eagles Defeat Commanders 26-18

The Philadelphia Eagles overcame a sluggish start to secure a gritty victory against the Washington Commanders, fueled by standout performances from Saquon Barkley and a resilient Jalen Hurts. Barkley, who has been a transformative addition to the Eagles' offense, was pivotal in the second half, delivering two game-clinching touchdowns in the final five minutes. His 23-yard score extended the Eagles' lead to two possessions, and just 20 seconds later, following a Jayden Daniels interception, he broke free for a 39-yard touchdown, effectively sealing the game. Barkley finished with 146 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and a season milestone of surpassing 1,000 yards. He also contributed with a 43-yard catch that set up a Jalen Hurts touchdown sneak earlier in the fourth quarter.

Hurts, despite an erratic start and a brief concussion evaluation, found his rhythm as the game progressed. After a first quarter marred by incompletions and a drive-killing sack, Hurts rebounded to complete 14 of his final 18 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. His scrambling ability and designed runs wore down Washington’s defense, particularly during two lengthy second-half scoring drives. The Eagles’ offensive line also found its footing, overcoming early struggles to pave the way for Barkley and provide better protection for Hurts.

On the other side, Jayden Daniels, the Commanders’ promising rookie quarterback, struggled for the second consecutive game. Daniels faced a stifling Eagles secondary, led by cornerbacks Darius Slay and rookie Quinyon Mitchell. The duo effectively neutralized Washington's receiving corps, including star wideout Terry McLaurin, who managed just one catch for 10 yards. Daniels’ late-game interception, a forced throw under duress, set up Barkley’s final touchdown and underscored a frustrating night for the Commanders' offense. With limited scrambling lanes and an inability to stretch the field, Daniels and his receivers faltered, contributing to the team’s second straight loss.

Defensively, the Commanders showed resilience early but faltered late. After keeping the Eagles in check for three quarters, fatigue and poor gap integrity allowed Barkley to exploit running lanes in the closing minutes. The absence of newly acquired cornerback Marshon Lattimore was felt, especially against Philadelphia’s dynamic offensive attack. Despite the defensive lapses, Washington’s inability to sustain offensive drives – five of which lasted under two minutes – left the defense overexposed.

The Eagles’ defense, meanwhile, delivered a stellar performance after an early hiccup, highlighted by exceptional efforts from Slay, Mitchell, and linebacker Zack Baun, who recorded 14 tackles and a critical fourth-down stop. The defensive front, led by Jalen Carter and Brandon Graham, consistently pressured Daniels and stifled the Commanders' ground game.

Statistically, the Eagles’ dominance was evident. Hurts finished the game completing all eight of his final passes against the blitz for 109 yards, rebounding from a rough start that saw him sacked twice. Barkley now leads the league with six games of 100 or more rushing yards this season, a testament to his revitalization in Philadelphia. With their offense finding its groove and the defense showing its teeth, the Eagles continue to assert themselves as a formidable contender in the NFC.
