Oakland Hills Keller Fire Forces Evacuation of Over 500 People Near I-580
A fast-moving wildfire broke out around 1:30 p.m. on Friday along Interstate 580, quickly spreading to a nearby residential area. The blaze scorched nearly 13 acres and was reported to be only 15% contained as firefighters battled to bring it under control.
The Oakland Fire Department responded swiftly, prompting evacuation orders that affected more than 500 residents in the surrounding area. Initial reports indicated that the fire had damaged ten structures, but officials later revised the count, confirming that two homes had been impacted by the flames.
In response to the smoke and poor air quality resulting from the fire, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued an air quality advisory for the remainder of the day. The advisory warned that smoke from the Oakland Hills fire, along with other fires burning throughout the region, could deteriorate air conditions in parts of the Bay Area.
Further complicating the situation, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) warned residents near the Keller Fire in Oakland to expect power shutoffs as a precaution. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao confirmed the anticipated outages and urged residents to stay safe and follow evacuation protocols.
Emergency crews are continuing their efforts to contain the fire and prevent further damage as winds and dry conditions remain a concern.
