The parent of Facebook and Instagram, must face a class-action lawsuit filed by the state of Massachusetts over allegations that its social media platforms have driven young users to addiction.

The Massachusetts Attorney General, Andrea Campbell, filed the lawsuit, which alleged that Meta's conduct was deceptive and manipulated users, primarily adolescents, to lead to compulsive use that is detrimental to users' mental health. The state claims that Meta's algorithms are designed to keep people engaged for longer periods, and thus may worsen issues like anxiety, depression, or other mental health disorders.

The class action lawsuit suits Meta for failure to protect young people against the growing adverse impacts from its platforms. The company is accused of doing little or no warning and protection towards users regarding potentially hazardous levels of social media use.

Meta denied the charge but wrote that "our platforms are designed to bring people closer, build community, and enable connection," rather than push people to addiction. It further emphasizes a commitment to safety for its users and boasts a range of features intended to encourage healthier use: tools that let people monitor and control their screen time, to limit interactions, to shut off unwanted notifications, and to enforce a digital well-being.

The Massachusetts lawsuit is one of several spates of cases in which states and advocacy groups are scrutinizing social media companies for their role in contributing problems in the mental health of young users. Other actions have been taken against other tech giants legally over their social media services amid growing concerns over the impact of social media on mental health.

As the case unfolds, it would continue to bring to light the roles and responsibilities of social media companies towards the welfare of users and problems relating to mental health. The conclusion may lead to broader implications for Meta but also for the broader tech industry as it navigates the viciously intertwined relationship between technology and mental health and user engagement.
