In a devastating incident that has shaken the community of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, a young girl has lost her life, and a boy remains hospitalized after being trapped in a collapsed sand hole on the beach.
The tragedy unfolded on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 3 p.m. in the area of 4424 El Mar Drive. According to reports from Fire Rescue officials, the children, a boy and a girl aged approximately 9 and 7 years old, were digging a hole on the beach with adults when the sand hole they were in collapsed, burying them beneath it.
Images captured by Chopper 4 showed the area cordoned off with police tape and surrounded by caution cones as emergency responders rushed to the scene. Good Samaritans on the beach were seen in a video obtained by CBS News Miami frantically attempting to dig the children out of the collapsed sand hole.
The boy was buried up to his chest, while the little girl was completely submerged in the sand underneath him. Despite the efforts of Pompano Fire officials who swiftly arrived and pulled both children from the sand, the girl tragically could not be saved and was pronounced dead on arrival at Broward General Medical Center.
The boy, however, remains hospitalized at Broward General, where he is reported to be in stable condition. The Broward Sheriff’s Office has taken the lead in investigating this heartbreaking incident.
The news of the young girl’s death and the boy’s hospitalization has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an outpouring of grief and support for the families involved.
