Published in the Annals of Tourism Research, the study involved interviews with 19 participants, revealing the profound impact of fridge magnets on their recollection of holiday experiences. Participants expressed that opening the fridge door and seeing these magnets served as a gateway to a flood of memories, far surpassing the capabilities of traditional photo albums or digital images stored on phones.
One participant aptly captured the sentiment, emphasizing the enduring value of fridge magnets in preserving holiday memories: “I’ll just get a fridge magnet at the end, and I can remember it all from [that]…How many people flick through their old photos on their phone? You couldn’t.”
Interestingly, many participants shared how certain magnets had become intertwined with poignant memories, serving as reminders of trips taken with loved ones who had since passed away or drifted apart.
