Amid escalating tensions with Russia, the Biden administration has announced a new weapons package for Ukraine, worth up to $300 million. The move comes after months of warnings about depleted funds, with officials citing savings made in weapons contracts as the source of the new funding.
National security adviser Jake Sullivan, in a briefing at the White House, emphasized the urgency of providing support to Ukraine, stating, “When Russian troops advance, and its guns fire, Ukraine does not have enough ammunition to fire back. That’s costing terrain. It’s costing lives.” President Joe Biden echoed this sentiment, calling the package “not nearly enough” and urging Congress to pass additional funding before it’s too late.
The announced package includes a range of military equipment aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder outlined the contents, which include Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, artillery rounds, anti-armor systems, small arms ammunition, demolitions, and maintenance equipment.
Explaining the source of funding for the aid package, senior defense officials highlighted savings achieved through negotiations and bundling funding across different areas. These savings provided the Pentagon with $300 million in replenishment funding, allowing for the allocation of additional support to Ukraine.
