The 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards dazzled audiences at the Santa Monica Pier, honoring the best in independent film and television with Aidy Bryant taking the stage as this year’s host. With categories embracing gender-neutral acting distinctions, the competition was fierce across six performance categories, three for film and three for TV.

Streaming live on Sunday, Feb. 25, via Film Independent’s YouTube channel and feed, the ceremony showcased outstanding talent and celebrated groundbreaking storytelling in the indie film and television landscape.

Leading the nominations were “American Fiction,” “May December,” and “Past Lives,” setting the stage for a night of recognition and acclaim. Notable winners included “The Holdovers,” which secured three awards, while “Past Lives” and “Beef” each claimed two victories.

Despite missing out on a Best Feature nomination, “The Holdovers” saw triumphs in individual categories, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph earning Best Supporting Performance and Dominic Sessa winning Best Breakthrough Performance. Meanwhile, “Past Lives” clinched the prestigious Best Feature award, with director Celine Song also receiving recognition as Best Director.

In the realm of television, Netflix’s limited series “Beef” made waves, securing victories for Best New Scripted Series and a stellar performance from Ali Wong, who was honored with the Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series award.

Reflecting on the impact of independent cinema, last year’s standout “Everything Everywhere All at Once” continued its success story, with Michelle Yeoh and Key Huh Quan earning accolades alongside wins for Best Feature and Best Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
