The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Galas and Special Presentations include the world premieres of Michael Winterbottom’s thriller Shoshana, David Yates’s crime drama Pain Hustlers, with Emily Blunt, and Ellen Kuras’s biopic Lee, starring Kate Winslet.

The festival earlier announced Taikia Waititi’s Searchlight Pictures underdog football narrative Next Goal Wins, Ladj Ly’s Les Indésirables, and Atom Egoyan’s Seven Veils, each of which are eligible for US distribution.

On Monday, the festival announced an additional 60 selections. Seven Veils’ international sales are handled by XYZ Films, and Les Indésirables’ are handled by Goodfellas.

Changes could be made to any choice. As a result of the ongoing Hollywood double strike, it’s unclear if talent will attend fall festivals. According to TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, his team is actively negotiating ‘film by film, person by person’ to bring as many of the selections as possible to the festival, which runs from 7 September to 17 September.

The first round of TIFF selections includes 12 North American debuts, four Canadian premieres, seven international premieres, and 37 global premieres. Bailey remarked that the choices “showcase a rich tapestry of talent, vision, and storytelling” and advised spectators to be ready for a “star-studded festival, showcasing the best of global cinema for film lovers in September.”

Four US actors and SAG-AFTRA members making feature directorial debuts received world premiere slots at TIFF: Ethan Hawke (Wildcat), Michael Keaton (Poolman), Anna Kendrick (Woman Of The Hour, formerly The Dating Game), and Chris Pine.

Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller star in Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut, North Star, and Viggo Mortensen makes his second appearance behind the camera with The Dead Don’t Hurt, following the 2020 TIFF selection Falling.

The selection includes Unicorns by Sally El Hosaini and James Krishna Floyd, The Critic by Anant Tucker, which stars Gemma Arterton, Ben Barnes, Ian McKellen, Leslie Manville, and March Strong, Mahalia Belo’s The End We Start From with Jodie Comer and Benedict Cumberbatch, and Wicked Little Letters by Thea Sharrock, which was announced by Studiocanal, Film4, Blueprint Pictures, and South Of The River Pictures.

The world debuts of Tony Goldwyn’s Ezra, Azazel Jacobs’ His Three Daughters, Ning Hao’s The Movie Emperor, and Alex Gibney’s freshly announced documentary In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon are also scheduled.
