Man United Ends Winless Streak with Crucial Victory Over Brentford

Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund both found the back of the net as Manchester United staged a second-half comeback to defeat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday, securing their first victory in over a month. The win lifted United to 10th place in the Premier League standings with 11 points from eight matches, alleviating some of the mounting pressure on manager Erik ten Hag, whose position had come under media scrutiny amid the team's poor form. Brentford now sit 12th with 10 points.

The match began in controversy, as United, down to 10 men, conceded deep into first-half stoppage time. Brentford’s Ethan Pinnock headed in a goal from a corner kick after referee Sam Barrott instructed Matthijs de Ligt to leave the pitch to address a bleeding gash on his head. The decision left United shorthanded, sparking protests from Ten Hag and assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, who vocally expressed their frustration to the fourth official.

However, the controversial moment seemed to galvanize United, who came out firing in the second half. In the 47th minute, Garnacho leveled the score with a well-taken finish, converting a cross from Marcus Rashford into the far corner from a tight angle inside the six-yard box.

United’s resurgence continued, and in the 62nd minute, Højlund delivered a moment of brilliance. Latching onto a clever back-heel pass from Bruno Fernandes, the Danish striker lofted the ball over Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken, securing his first Premier League goal of the season and giving United the lead.

Brentford, who had scored inside the first two minutes in their previous four league games, had their chances early on. Kevin Schade came close in the third minute, but was unable to meet Vitaly Janelt's ball into the box. Christian Nørgaard forced United goalkeeper André Onana into a spectacular save in the first half, but Brentford struggled to maintain their attacking threat after the break.

“We were the better team in the first half, but the second half was a complete opposite. We were way too passive, and we knew they would come out strong,” Brentford coach Thomas Frank said, lamenting his team's inability to sustain their momentum.

United's dominance was reflected in the statistics, as they registered 11 shots on target compared to Brentford's two. Christian Eriksen also had a good chance for United, firing over the bar, as Ten Hag's side pushed for a much-needed win. The victory marked United’s first since their 7-0 League Cup triumph over Barnsley on September 17, and their first league win since defeating Southampton 3-0 on September 14.

The win helps steady the ship for Ten Hag, who will be hoping his team can build on this performance moving forward.
