Indian-American Vivek Ramaswamy Teases Position in Trump’s Future Team
Vivek Ramaswamy, the biotech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate, is hinting at a role in the administration of President-elect Donald Trump. Speaking on ABC's This Week, Ramaswamy discussed his potential involvement, mentioning he has "a couple great options" and has been engaged in “high-impact discussions” about his future within the administration. While remaining vague on specific positions, Ramaswamy acknowledged his desire to make a “biggest possible impact” on the nation.
During the interview, host Jonathan Karl suggested two key roles that Ramaswamy could pursue: the soon-to-be-vacant Ohio Senate seat, due to Vice President-elect JD Vance’s resignation, and the position of Secretary of Homeland Security, a role that would place him in a high-profile position over immigration and national security. Ramaswamy refrained from confirming his plans but acknowledged that these roles were among his considerations.
Should Ramaswamy pursue the role of Homeland Security Secretary, he would be responsible for implementing Trump’s immigration policies, which include a large-scale deportation operation. Trump has committed to initiating what he calls the largest mass deportation effort in modern U.S. history, targeting the removal of at least one million undocumented immigrants. Ramaswamy’s appointment to this role would align with Trump’s goals of enforcing stricter border and immigration policies, as well as overseeing cybersecurity and emergency preparedness.
Alternatively, Ramaswamy could seek to fill Vance’s Ohio Senate seat, a position that might offer him a unique opportunity to build a political career in his home state, which has turned increasingly red. Ohio’s shift has come partly due to perceived neglect from the Democratic National Committee, which has deprioritized the state in recent election cycles, making it a stronghold for Republicans. If Ramaswamy takes on the Senate seat, Ohio’s Republican governor would appoint him as a temporary replacement until a special election is held in 2026 to complete the remainder of Vance’s term.
Ramaswamy’s commitment to the Trump administration reflects his alignment with the president-elect’s agenda, as he has been a vocal supporter throughout the 2024 election cycle. Whether he chooses the Homeland Security role or a Senate seat, Ramaswamy’s entry into national politics in either capacity would likely mark a significant chapter in his political career, potentially positioning him as a prominent figure in conservative politics.
