In the aftermath of Barbie’s success at the Oscars and its status as Warner Bros’ highest-grossing movie, another female-driven project is in the works, led by Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy. Tim Burton is reportedly attached to direct “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman,” a reimagining of the 1958 Warner Bros. classic. Gillian Flynn, known for her work on “Gone Girl” and “Sharp Objects,” is writing the script for the new project.
The original sci-fi cult classic, made for a modest $88,000, featured Allison Hayes as a wealthy heiress who grows into a giant after a close encounter with an alien, complicating her already troubled marriage. The film achieved cult status due to its unique storyline and visual effects, and now, with Burton at the helm, the reimagining is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the narrative.
Burton, who previously directed the ’50s sci-fi-inspired “Mars Attacks!” in 1996, has a track record of delivering reimaginings with mass appeal. The star-studded ensemble cast of “Mars Attacks!” included Jack Nicholson, Annette Bening, Natalie Portman, Danny DeVito, and Michael J. Fox. The film grossed over $101 million globally.
For “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman,” Burton is joined by producers Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper, with Kai Dolbashian serving as an executive producer. Burton’s extensive directing credits include blockbuster hits such as “Alice in Wonderland,” “Planet of the Apes,” “Batman,” “Batman Returns,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
In addition to his involvement in “Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman,” Burton is gearing up for the sequel to his 1988 Warner Bros. blockbuster, “Beetlejuice,” set to release on September 6 with the title “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 2024 A.D.”
Meanwhile, Gillian Flynn continues to make waves with her writing and adaptations. Following her success with “Gone Girl” and “Sharp Objects,” Flynn is set to adapt her novel “Dark Places” into an HBO limited series. She will serve as co-creator, co-showrunner, and writer for the series. Flynn is represented by WME, Theresa Kang at Blue Marble Management, and Jackoway Austen.
