Green Bay Packers Rout San Francisco 49ers in Must-Win Playoff Clash

The Green Bay Packers delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, cruising to a 38-10 victory over the injury-ravaged San Francisco 49ers. The win moved the Packers to 8-3, keeping them firmly in control of their playoff aspirations, while the 49ers dropped to 5-6, placing their postseason hopes in serious jeopardy. This loss further complicates their chances of making the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

The 49ers, already shorthanded, were missing key players, including quarterback Brock Purdy (shoulder), All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), and All-Pro pass rusher Nick Bosa (hip/oblique). With backup quarterback Brandon Allen at the helm, San Francisco was unable to gain any rhythm early in the game. The Packers seized control quickly, racing to a 17-0 lead by the second quarter, as the 49ers could only manage six offensive plays in the first 23 minutes of the game. San Francisco showed some signs of life late in the second quarter, crafting a successful drive that ended with a touchdown, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.

However, those hopes were dashed midway through the third quarter when Packers safety Xavier McKinney intercepted Allen and returned the ball 48 yards to the San Francisco 26-yard line. This set up running back Josh Jacobs for his second touchdown of the game, extending the Packers’ lead to 24-7. Another turnover—Allen’s fumble on a sack in the fourth quarter—led to Jacobs’ third touchdown, pushing Green Bay’s lead to 31-10. The Packers then put the game out of reach with a final touchdown pass from Jordan Love to Malik Heath in the closing minutes, solidifying the blowout victory.

The Packers have been on a strong upward trajectory since a rough 2-2 start, which included a knee injury to Love that was feared to be season-ending. Fortunately for Green Bay, Love only missed two games and has since returned to lead the team to a 6-2 record, featuring one of the NFL's top offenses. Sunday’s win was a balanced team effort, with the Packers forcing three turnovers and scoring 38 points against a stout 49ers defense. Love finished the day with 163 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Jacobs rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns.

Green Bay's defense also played a crucial role, limiting San Francisco's playmakers in the absence of Purdy. Tight end George Kittle led the 49ers with six receptions for 82 yards, but wide receiver Deebo Samuel was largely quiet, catching only one pass for 21 yards. Samuel’s momentum-shifting 87-yard kickoff return was called back for a penalty, further hindering San Francisco's chances. Running back Christian McCaffrey, still recovering from injury, struggled once again, totaling just 68 yards from scrimmage and averaging a paltry 2.8 yards per carry. His fumble in the fourth quarter led directly to Green Bay's final touchdown.

With Allen at quarterback, the 49ers finished with just 199 passing yards, and despite a touchdown, his mistakes—one interception and one lost fumble—played a significant role in the defeat. For the 49ers, this loss is another blow to a season that began with high hopes but has now been derailed by injuries and inconsistent play. With a tough remaining schedule that includes games against the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, and Detroit Lions, San Francisco needs a lot to go their way to stay in the playoff race. Purdy’s status for next week’s crucial game against the Bills remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, the Packers are in a favorable position, trailing only the 10-1 Detroit Lions and 9-2 Minnesota Vikings in a competitive NFC North. Though they’re still chasing the division leaders, the Packers are well positioned for a wild-card spot and a potential postseason berth.
