In a delightful interview on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, renowned actors Robert Downey Jr. and Jimmy Fallon fondly recalled their failed auditions for the 2006 romantic comedy, ‘The Holiday,’ directed by Nancy Meyers. The film, starring Jude Law and Jack Black, follows the story of two women, portrayed by Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz, who swap homes during the holiday season. Despite not securing the roles, Downey and Fallon shared amusing anecdotes about their audition experience and the unique bond they formed during the process.

Both Downey and Fallon were invited to audition as seat-fillers, hoping for a potential breakthrough opportunity. As they sat in the same room, witnessing Jack Black and Jude Law successfully clinch their parts, they excitedly anticipated the chance to read lines with the leading actresses.

Downey said of meeting Fallon at the time. “Jack Black is getting his part and Jude Law is definitely getting my part, but [Meyers] needed someone to read with the gals, and we’re sitting there going, ‘It’s about to happen for us.’”

During the audition, Downey attempted to impress the casting team with his British accent, considering the role eventually went to Jude Law. However, Kate Winslet playfully commented that it was the “worst British accent” she had ever heard. Despite the light-hearted banter, the actors couldn’t help but laugh off the situation.

Fallon, feeling confident beside the esteemed Robert Downey Jr., was in awe of the veteran actor’s talent during their scene. He even humorously proclaimed that he would have taken Jack Black’s role if given the chance, even agreeing to do it for half the price. Fallon went on to describe the experience as “mind-blowing” and Hailed Downey as the best actor he has ever worked with.

Although the chemistry between Downey and Fallon was undeniable, Nancy Meyers ultimately felt that their presence wasn’t a perfect fit for the roles. The director expressed her sincere appreciation for their auditions but gracefully concluded that they were not what she envisioned for the characters.

Host Howard Stern disagreed with Meyers’ decision, expressing that the movie would have been even more delightful with both Downey and Fallon on board. However, the actors took it all in stride, recounting the experience with humor and grace.

The audition for ‘The Holiday’ may not have resulted in Robert Downey Jr. and Jimmy Fallon landing roles in the beloved rom-com, but it created enduring memories and a hilarious story to share. Despite the initial disappointment, both actors continue to shine in their respective careers, and their camaraderie during that fateful audition remains a cherished memory. Fans of ‘The Holiday’ can now imagine a humorous alternate universe where Downey and Fallon starred alongside Winslet and Diaz in this winter classic. As Hollywood continues to deliver new stories and unforgettable performances, Downey and Fallon’s camaraderie serves as a reminder of the joy and laughter that comes with the world of entertainment.
