A Hunt for Justice: A Review of Delhi Crime Season One

In December 2012, an unimaginably brutal crime against a 23-year-old woman in Delhi, India, made international headlines. This incident sparked the creation of “Delhi Crime,” a gripping Netflix drama. The seven episodes present a fictionalised account of the events, but one that is mostly accurate in terms of the key facts of the case.

Since its announcement, Delhi Crime, a Netflix India original based on the investigation of the horrific 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case, has been making headlines. when the rape case shook the nation’s collective conscience as the sordid details of the crime unfolded headline by headline, day after day, and as the nation prayed for the rape victim’s survival despite the fact that she suffered irreparable injuries and could never have led a normal life.

Six men assaulted Nirbhaya and his friend inside the bus from Munirka bus stop, where they were looking for a ride home after seeing a movie in South Delhi. The two were beaten with iron rods, and Nirbhaya was dragged behind the bus and gangraped by everyone. Her intestines were also pulled out by the perpetrators, who assaulted her with an iron rod.

The case was so grim, dark, and shocking that the role of the Delhi Police was never revealed, and it appears that the series’ creator, Richie Mehta, wanted to show a different side of the institution and give them some credit for their hard work.

Vartika Chaturvedi, DCP South Delhi (Shefali Shah) is awoken in the middle of the night by a disturbing call stating that a naked boy and a girl have been discovered in the middle of the road. Vartika detects something fishy right away and begins her investigation. She is horrified by the case’s unprecedented brutality. She resolves to crack it as soon as possible because any delay would result in the accused escaping forever. While Vartika has taken the battle personally because she has a young daughter almost the same age as Deepika, political pressure continues to mount and protests intensify, while her adolescent daughter bears the brunt of the negative wave against Delhi Police.

Vartika is undeterred and will not stop until she and her team have apprehended all six criminals.

In short, the cops are the heroes of this story—selfless, determined, exhausted, nibbling on whatever pathetic snack is brought to them as they sit in the office plotting the search for the gang’s remaining members on the bus. The legal system, the target of so much rage following the actual assault, is only mentioned briefly at a meeting. All of this is why this series about the world-famous crime that occurred on the Delhi bus, with all of its horrific facts—but most importantly, its story of justice triumph—will not be banned in India.
