Delhi Crime, the 2019 Netflix series is back with another full-packed season 2. Here is a little overview of Season 1 of the Crime series. The series’ season 1 is based on the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case, follows South Delhi’s DCP Vartika Chaturvedi as she forms a special squad of officers to find the six offenders while battling inadequate infrastructure, bureaucratic red tape, and increasing public pressure.

The seven-episode series reveals even the most minute details of the horrible crime—a girl gang rape—that occurred in Delhi in December 2012. The crime was so horrifying that the entire nation’s fury could be seen, heard, and felt. Delhi Crime is not your typical “cat and mouse” game; it was inspired by Delhi Police’s investigation into the Nirbhaya gang rape case, a crime so horrible that it rocked the country and sent its citizens to the streets in protest. The series transports you back to that 2012 winter through the eyes of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi (Shefali Shah), a no-nonsense, severe police officer with heart.

Deepika, who was gang-raped in a moving bus, and her injured companion Akash are discovered laying motionless by the side of the road just before head policeman Ram Pratap ( Asif Alii Khan) arrives in the first episode. You cringe watching the moment, which establishes the tone for the entire series. From there, DCP Vartika’s capable task team searches for the accused in a variety of locations and ways. The series subtly critiques our socio-political-economic environment and how it affects the police force through its “realistic” account of the entire inquiry. It details the various obstacles they confront on the job, including how poorly they are paid and often treated, as well as how to cope with protests, red tape, insufficient infrastructure, rising public pressures, and even criticism from their own family members. You see that they have a more frail and human side.

The fast-moving, expertly crafted show rarely veers from the main narrative. It was heartbreaking without being dramatic and gut-wrenching without being graphic. Watch it for the clever script, which is supported by excellent lead and supporting actor performances. Things changed and laws were altered, but the price society had to pay in the shape of a girl’s life cannot be reversed. It took eight long years, from 2012 to 2020, for justice to be served and the guilty were hanged. As the nation stood up for the girl, it seemed more like the accuser was suing the entire country.

Everyone should view this in order to learn how the police function and to regain their trust and respect for the nation’s police officers. Put this on your watch list if you have a Netflix subscription. You won’t be let down. You’ll come away from this epic drama with a little more feeling than usual and a particular spot in your heart.
