Tosin Cole from 61st Street has been cast as the series’ lead in Netflix’s upcoming superhero project Supacell, reported by Deadline. The series is developed by Andrew Onwabolu. The series features six Black characters with superpowers who are from South London. Cole will portray Michael Lasaki, the main character.

Supacell’s plot is largely unknown, with the exception of the fact that it will be a sci-fi superhero series. The official synopsis of the series is as follows, “A group of ordinary people from South London unexpectedly develop super powers with no clear connection between them other than them all being Black. As they deal with the impact on their daily lives, one man has to bring them together to protect the one he loves all while avoiding the powerful and nefarious agents that have noticed their special abilities.”

Next Monday, filming for the series will start in South London. Sebastian Thiel of Dreaming Whilst Black will helm three of the six episodes, with Rapman serving as the principal director and showrunner. “Ordinary people who wear their everyday clothes and grow over time,” is how Rapman characterises his characters. “Put it this way: We’ve got all the powers you can get in Marvel, and they come to South London,” the speaker continued.

Rapman said Cole’s Michael is a “van driver, an everyday working man, who’s deep in love” with Dionne, played by Adelayo Adedayo, Rapman told Deadline. The cast also includes Nadine Mills (The Weekend), Eric Kofi Abrefa (Blue Story, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Calvin Demba (The Rig), Josh Tedeku (Moonhaven), Rayxia Ojo (Call The Midwife) and Giacomo Mancini (Top Boy).

Six episodes will constitute Netflix’s Supacell, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Each one will last for 60 minutes. Supacell’s premiere date hasn’t been revealed by Netflix, however given that filming began in 2022, it’s likely to happen in 2023. Pre-production has begun, and the scripts for the series are now being written.
