Fans of “The Umbrella Academy” won’t have to wait long to see their favourite orphan heroes return to action.
The young superhero program will return on June 22nd, according to showrunner Steve Blackman, who confirmed the news at SXSW on Sunday. After launching on Netflix in 2019 and releasing Season 2 in 2020, the series went on hiatus in 2021. The Sparrow Academy, the next nemesis of the Hargreeves family, is introduced in a new trailer released by Netflix.
Following the popularity of the time-travel-themed Season 2, “The Umbrella Academy” will join a busy slate of summer genre television on Netflix, highlighted by Season 4 of “Stranger Things,” which will premiere on May 27.

Season 3 of “The Umbrella Academy” is particularly remarkable for being the first season to be shot after star Elliot Page came out as transgender. Netflix has openly expressed its support for the revelation, retrospectively amending the credits of the first two seasons to correctly identify him, but it remains to be seen how the program will deal with it.
“After putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday, the Umbrella Academy return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline once and for all,” according to Netflix’s official description of Season 3. But, after a brief jubilation, they find that things aren’t precisely (or perhaps at all) as they left them.

Then there’s the Sparrow Academy. The Sparrows, who are smart, fashionable, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, instantly clash with the Umbrellas in a violent confrontation that turns out to be the least of everyone’s problems. Navigating their own challenges, losses, and surprises – as well as dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the Universe (which they may have caused) – all they need to do now is persuade Dad’s new and possibly better family to assist them in righting the wrongs that their arrival caused. Will they be able to return to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Is this new universe poised to disclose more than simply a blip in time?”

The cast of the series includes Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H Min, Colm Feore, Ritu Arya, Justin Cornwell, Britne Oldford, Jake Epstein, Genesis Rodriguez, Cazzie David, and Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton.
Blackman, Jeff F King, who also directs, Keith Goldberg, Mike Richardson, and Jeremy Webb are executive producers for the future season.

Netflix will release Season 3 of “The Umbrella Academy” on June 22.
