A new trailer for Netflix’s live-action series adaptation of Resident Evil has been released, teasing more zombie mayhem. Fans of Capcom’s horror-survival games will recognise some of the monsters in this trailer, including zombie dogs and the iconic Lickers, but there are also some new additions, including giant spiders, kaiju caterpillars, and more. Despite supposedly being set after the events of the games, the show is playing fast and loose with Resident Evil lore.
The trailer shows more of the scale of the series, which is based on the long-running video game turned movie franchise, than the previous teaser did. Along with the hordes of zombies shown in the previous clip, there are giant spiders, an enormous wormlike creature that bursts from underground, and several other nightmare-inducing creatures.
The series was picked up by Netflix in August 2020. The TV adaptation is the long-running franchise’s first live-action series, with the first video game iteration debuting in 1996. It has also inspired seven feature films and a Netflix animated series, both of which will premiere in July 2021.
“Year 2036 – 14 years after a devastating virus triggered a global disaster, Jade Wesker battles for survival in a world overrun by blood-thirsty infected and deranged monsters,” reads the official Resident Evil description. Jade (Ella Balinska; Tamara Smart plays the character at a younger age) is haunted by her past in New Raccoon City, her father’s (Lance Reddick) chilling connections to the Umbrella Corporation, but most of all by what happened to her sister, Billie (Adeline Rudolph and Siena Agudong) in this absolute carnage.
The first season of Resident Evil will consist of eight episodes and will premiere on Netflix on July 14, 2022. Capcom also revealed a remake of Resident Evil 4 over the weekend, in case you missed it.
