What We Know So Far About Netflix’s ‘Spy Kids: Armageddon’

Following the success of We Can Be Heroes, Netflix is reuniting with Robert Rodriguez, this time to reboot the fan-favourite Spy Kids franchise. According to Production Weekly, the new film will be titled Spy Kids: Armageddon and will centre on a new family of spies.
Robert Rodriguez will write, produce, and direct the film once more, as he did for the first four Spy Kids films. He most recently worked on the Netflix film We Can Be Heroes, as well as episodes of the Star Wars series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

The new film will be produced in collaboration with Skydance Media and Spy Kids rights holder Spyglass Media, which signed a deal with Rodriguez a year ago to work on redeveloping the property. Spy Kids: Armageddon, despite not having a title at the time, was first announced on March 30, 2022. Skydance will oversee development and production, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger producing. Racer Max and Elizabeth Avellan will also produce. Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre of Spyglass will executive produce.

Will we see any of the familiar characters again?

It’s unclear whether Spy Kids: Armageddon is a full reboot or a soft reboot at this time. In the case of the former, this would be similar to the movie The Karate Kid, starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, which is set in a universe separate from the original Karate Kid films and Cobra Kai, so no characters from The Karate Kid can ever appear in Cobra Kai.
However, if this is only a soft reboot set in the same universe as the original films, the original cast is very likely to return. As is often the case with legacy characters, Juni and Carmen may be able to serve as mentor figures to the new kids. Danny Trejo as Machete, with his cool spy gadgets, is the most likely character to return, in our opinion.

Is Spy Kids: Armageddon still in production?

Spy Kids: Armageddon is currently in development on Netflix, with few details available. Austin, Texas will be the location for filming.

Spy Kids: Armageddon has yet to receive a release date from Netflix, but given the film’s early development stage, it’s likely that it won’t be released for some time. In the second half of 2023, perhaps.
