In the much-liked horror genre, an Irish film titled “Unwelcome” is going to be released this year. Created by Warner Bros UK, the scary trailer of the film has been released and is making the viewers watch it in a well-lit room. Unwelcome is adapted from Irish and Scottish folk culture myths and legends about goblins (supernatural creatures who are hostile). Yes you heard that right, blood-thirsty goblins whose purpose is to make the lives of the protagonists hell. Although, the film creators announced that it is going to be released in February this year but so far it hasn’t.

Now, Unwelcome focuses on the story written by Mark Stay. A couple named Jamie and Maya decide to leave their urban life in a big city and live in the peaceful surroundings of Irish countryside. However, as the audience is quite familiar what’s going to happen next, their very desire for a placid life will be the reason for things going south rather than hunky dory. They soon uncover that they are not welcome in their new home as the forested area near their garden is home to murderous goblins.

According to the Irish-Scottish folktale, goblins are actually Redcaps, mythical creatures. The director of the film, Jon Wright, who has Irish ancestry and is fascinated by folk stories told Empire, “My grandfather. who was an Irish farmer, believed in fairies. He used to say that he’d tried to build a wall at the foot of his garden, but every morning when he got up, it had been knocked down. He believed it was being built on fairy land, so he couldn’t have it there. And I had a book of fairy tales, Grimm fairy tales, in my grandfather’s house, which I always used to read when I went to stay. I’ve always been fascinated by myths and legends, and the sort of primal way that they tap into human nature”.

The character of Maya, a pregnant woman fighting against merciless goblins, will be played by Hannah John-Kamen. She is best known for Killjoys (2015), The Stranger (2020) and Game of Thrones (2011). Whereas Douglas Booth will portray Jamie, he has appeared in films such as Romeo and Juliet (2013), The Dirt (2019) and The Riot Club (2019). The cast also includes Jamie Lee O’Donnell of Derry Girls (2018) fame and Colm Meaney who was in Star Trek (1993).

Directed by Jon Wright, who also served as the writer along with Mark Stay, both have earlier worked together on sci-fiction Robot Overlords (2014), Unwelcome doesn’t have a specific release date although the trailer is available.
