The cast of Netflix’s LGBT coming-of-age rom-com series released a new video on Christmas Day wishing the show’s viewers a very good holiday season. Given how tightly this season is tied to delivering gifts, it was only natural for the cast members Joe Locke, Kit Connor, Tobie Donovan, Yasmin Finney, and William Gao to arrive bearing good news for the show’s fans: Season 2 will debut in 2023.

Netflix’s Heartstopper proved to be a great success, and less than a month after the show’s spring release, the streaming service renewed it for an extra two seasons. Four new cast members were added for Season 2’s filming, which started in September and ended in early December. The new season will premiere on Netflix within the next year since filming has already been completed.

Heartstopper, based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series of the same name, follows teenagers Charlie Spring (Locke) and Nick Nelson (Connor) as well as their friends as they experience growing up and developing their identities. While Nick’s journey was one of self-discovery and realising what his developing feelings for Charlie were, that of Charlie and Elle (Finney) was one of understanding exactly who they were and making their larger world one that accepted them without apology.

Since Season 1 followed the first two books in Oseman’s series, we can assume that Season 2 will cover the next two or at least draw from them. However, little is known about the plot for Season 2. We won’t know for certain until 2023 whether this entails a school trip to Paris packed with teen angst. Heartstopper also stars Sebastian Croft, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Rhea Norwood, and Jenny Walser in addition to Locke, Connor, Finney, Donovan, and Gao. Jack Barton, Nima Taleghani, Bradley Riches, and newcomer Leila Khan join for Season 2. There is still no information on whether Olivia Colman, who played Nick’s mother in Season 1, will return.
