Jessica M. Thompson’s new supernatural horror film from Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Releasing entered theatres earlier this year and has now been planned for a Christmas Eve 2022 release on Netflix in the United States. The new horror film, starring Nathalie Emmanuel, Thomas Doherty, and Stephanie Corneliussen, is about a lady who takes a DNA test and discovers a long-lost relative. She is invited to a beautiful wedding, but not everything is as it appears, and she is thrown into hell.

The film was released in theatres on August 26th and earned $7 million at the box office that weekend. So far, the reviews for the film have not been good. The film is rated 21% by critics and 57% by the general public on RottenTomatoes. According to WeGoThisCovered, the film “aims high, and although it’s routinely striking on a visual and aesthetic level, the storyline lets the Gothic horror down in the end.”

When will The Invitation be available on Netflix?

Let’s start with the two territories that will see this film as part of Netflix’s initial window arrangement with Sony. For those who are unfamiliar, a first window (also known as the Pay-1 window) is when the theatrical exclusivity window finishes and a film goes to a streaming service or provider for an 18-month period.

Most Sony films that were released theatrically have already been published on Netflix, including Uncharted, Morbius, Where the Crawdads Sing, and, as of the time of writing, Bullet Train.
In the case of India, new Sony films have regularly arrived 120 days after their theatrical debut. That has been the case for some Sony films, but not all. We’re delighted to announce that The Invitation has a theatrical window of 120 days, which means that we now have assurance that The Invitation will be available on Netflix India and in the United States on Christmas Eve (December 24th), 2022.

Netflix receives new Sony films in many locations, although generally a year or two after their initial release. Netflix Canada and the United Kingdom, for example, acquire Sony films two years after their theatrical release. This is also true for countries like Belgium, Greece, Japan, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and South Africa. That means The Invitation will be available on Netflix in these areas sometime in 2024.
