The Batman is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman that will be released in 2022. It is a reboot of the Batman film franchise that was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions and released by Warner Bros. Pictures. Matt Reeves directed the picture, and he and Peter Craig collaborated on the screenplay. Along with Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell, it stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman. The film follows Batman as he uncovers corruption while hunting the Riddler (Dano), a serial killer who targets Gotham’s elite.
Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) in 2013, and development began shortly after. Affleck agreed to direct, produce, co-write, and appear in The Batman, but then stepped out due to his concerns about the film. Reeves took over and rewrote the plot, erasing any references to the DCEU. He drew influence from Alfred Hitchcock’s films and the New Hollywood era, as well as comic books like Year One (1987), The Long Halloween (1996–97), and Ego (1997–98). (2000). Pattinson was first cast in May of this year, with more casting to follow in late 2019. Between January 2020 and March 2021, principal photography took place in London and Chicago. The Batman had its global premiere on March 1, 2022, at Lincoln Center in New York, and was released theatrically on March 4, 2022. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was twice postponed from its original June 2021 release date. The film grossed about $767 million against a budget of $185–200 million, making it the highest-grossing film of 2022. It was praised for its cast, musical score, cinematography, Reeves’ direction, action sequences, and story, however some criticised its length. With two sequels planned and two spin-off television series in production for HBO Max, it is meant to start a Batman shared universe.

The Batman 2 has officially been confirmed by Warner Bros. that will make a sequel to The Batman. Star Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves will both return for the follow-up to the biggest film of 2021 so far.
