Aldis Hodge Stars as Detective Alex Cross in New TV Adaptation
Prime Video's new series Cross, starring Aldis Hodge as the iconic detective Alex Cross, aims to succeed where previous big-screen adaptations faltered by offering a deeper exploration of the character's world. Hodge, known for roles in Leverage and City on a Hill, explains that playing Cross pushes him into emotionally complex territory, balancing the dark, lighthearted, and vulnerable sides of the character. The series expands on Cross' personal life, including his grief over his wife’s murder, his relationship with his children, and the dynamic with his family and close friends, including his police partner John Sampson.
This adaptation gives more space to the rich narrative of Cross' life, something the fast-paced movie adaptations couldn’t fully capture. Showrunner Ben Watkins drew inspiration from James Patterson's extensive Alex Cross book series, which offers a more comprehensive look at the detective’s world. Watkins emphasizes that a TV series allows for more character-driven storytelling, blending the thrilling mysteries with a deep dive into who Cross is in the present day.
Cross also presents an updated and more charismatic version of the character, incorporating physicality, charm, and authenticity in portraying him as a Black detective. The show isn’t shying away from addressing the tension between law enforcement and the Black community, ensuring a more realistic portrayal of the challenges Cross faces both in his professional and personal life.
Hodge is particularly proud of the father figure Cross represents, countering the stereotype of absent Black fathers. This aspect is key to making Cross a relatable, real character in 2024. The series offers a more holistic, modern take on the detective, combining thriller elements with a poignant character study.
