The highly anticipated film “Megalopolis” by legendary director Francis Ford Coppola has created a buzz in the film industry. Although a rough cut of the film was secretly screened in September at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), details have been scarce due to strict embargoes. However, actor Adam Driver, who stars in the film, recently shared some insights into the project.
Describing the film as “wild” and “unlike anything” he’s seen before, Driver praised the bold and imaginative nature of “Megalopolis.” He expressed excitement about the epic and risky nature of the film while refraining from revealing too many details. Driver highlighted that the financial independence of Coppola, who financed the film himself, created a unique and liberating shooting experience. With no excess conversations or financial constraints, Coppola had creative control, making it one of the best shooting experiences for Driver.
According to Driver, Coppola’s financial freedom allowed him to make creative decisions without interference, and the actor appreciated the generosity and philosophical nature of the director. Spike Lee, who saw 30 minutes of the film in August, described it as “OMG amazing.”
While details about “Megalopolis” are still limited, Mike Figgis, director of “Leaving Las Vegas,” revealed that a documentary accompanying the film’s release will feature interviews with Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg. Set in a futuristic New York called New Rome, the film revolves around an architect seeking to rebuild a utopian metropolis after a disaster, blending philosophy and political satire.
With a star-studded cast including Adam Driver, Forrest Whitaker, Jon Voight, Nathalie Emmanuel, Laurence Fishburne, Shia LaBeouf, Aubrey Plaza, Talia Shire, and Dustin Hoffman, “Megalopolis” is expected to premiere at Cannes in 2024. Francis Ford Coppola, known for classics like “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now,” financed the film himself, making it a passion project more than 30 years in the making, with an estimated cost of $120 million.
